HOW TO USE YOUR FENCE FOR PRIVACY AND A NOISE BARRIER

When you're inside your home, you have the right to privacy, but with crammed living and loud highways, your home may not be as private and quiet as you'd like. Luckily, fences can help boost privacy and better block noise from entering or leaving the property. If you want more privacy in your home and yard, check out these tips.

Choose a Privacy-Friendly Material for the Backyard

Fences come in many styles, and they are made from many materials, but some are better than others at providing privacy. Wood, vinyl, and composite boards are commonly used for privacy fences because they can be built tall. Plus, the boards can be installed flush together, with little to no gaps for prying eyes.

Another great feature of these types of fences is that they offer great protection. They make it hard for children or animals to get out of the yard. At the same time, as long as you have a good gate, these fences can be great barriers for intruders. Trespassers can't easily jump or squeeze through the fence.

On the other hand, materials like chain-link, aluminum, iron, etc. are terrible choices for privacy because they have large gaps, which won't offer any privacy or noise reduction. They may be a good choice, however, if your biggest concern is keeping your dog or children inside the yard. They aren't good at keeping people out, however, because intruders may be able to just climb right over.

Luckily, a lot of the privacy-friendly materials are on the cheaper end of the pricespectrum. Wood, for example, may only cost $10 to $30 per liner foot (including materials and labor). Vinyl is another affordable option at $20 to $40 a liner foot, but metal and aluminum may cost you $35 to $55 or more per liner foot.

Consider a Lower Alternative Fence in the Front Yard

A tall fence is great in the backyard, but most cities have laws regarding how high your fence can be, especially in the front yard. Typically, a fence in the backyard can be as tall as 6 feet. If you live near a noisy highway, you may be approved for a taller backyard fence. Keep in mind, if you live in an area with an HOA, they may have their own special regulations.

Unfortunately, front yard fences can only be about 3 feet high. Therefore, you can't use the same type of fence in the front yard for privacy and noise reduction, so you'll need to choose an alternative. One great way to help with noise is to install a stone fence. Even at only about 2 1/2 feet tall, these fences do a great job of lowering traffic noise.

Of course, a low stone fence won't offer total privacy like taller backyard fences, but even a lower fence can prevent some trespassers and animals from entering your property. It can also help keep some pets inside the yard.

If you still don't have enough privacy with a lower fence, consider incorporating privacy plants along with a good fence. These will help offer more privacy without the need to break the law and build a bigger fence.

Fences are a great way to provide security and privacy, and some can even block noise from heavy traffic. While you may not be able to build a fence as tall as you'd like, you have other options to boost privacy and noise reduction in your front and backyard.
