5 POPULAR GATE STYLES TO CONSIDER FOR YOUR DRIVEWAY
Admin • Jan 29, 2021

Your driveway gate plays an important role. It's the mobile part of your fence line and the daily point of movement for you and your car. While it's an extension of the fence line, the gate often acts alone aesthetically, meaning it might follow the general style of the rest of the fence while displaying unique qualities.

With that in mind, manufacturers have created driveway gates in numerous styles and materials. The materials often work together with the design to create a truly unique style. If you're in the market for a new driveway gate, consider one of the popular styles below.

1. Privacy Gate

Many homeowners opt for privacy fencing because they don't want neighbors and passersby to peek into their yards. Well, it makes no sense to attach an open gate to such a fence, then. The privacy fencing will be compromised. Such homeowners usually opt for a privacy gate.

These gates usually look exactly like the privacy fence. However, you can get creative. For instance, you could start with an open metal gate and add privacy screens behind. This look will be attractive because the wood will showcase the metalwork. You can also opt for decorative wood slats, say woven wood, instead of the standard privacy style.

2. Ornate Metal Gate

If you want to show off some metalwork, driveway gates are renowned for coming in ornate designs. The style dates back to the wrought iron tradition, but you find these fancy styles in aluminum, too.

You have many different options for ornate driveway gates. For example, you can choose from different top rails. Some gates feature a double band at the top with metal scrolls or other ornamentation. Quite often, these gates feature an arc or a concavity. You can also have the top finish in pointed finials.

The pickets are another area for ornamentation. You often adorn them with scrolls or leaves. You can also choose another double band near the bottom as a sort of lower rail. Finally, aluminum or wrought iron can have different colors.

3. Streamlined Metal Gate

The opposite side of the above idea is a streamlined metal gate. Such gates are common when you choose aluminum as your material. You can still opt for some of the above ornamentation, just on a lesser scale.

For instance, many streamlined aluminum gates feature that double band at the top but without the arched shape or the additional ornamentation. That double band is still attractive because it adds a sense of geometry to your gate. Or, if you need extra security, choose a gate that finishes in those pointed finials.

4. Rustic Wooden Gate

Wood is a classic building material for any project, including your driveway gate. In fact, you can even have your fencing contractors custom make a wooden driveway gate for your fence.

That said, wooden gates often feature a rustic style. For one, they weather. Weathering isn't necessarily bad because it gives the wood a distinctive patina. However, weathered wood isn't as streamlined as metal.

For another, homeowners often choose a ranch or craftsman style. For example, they might choose a split rail gate with crossed pickets, which is a classic ranch style. So, consider a wooden gate if you favor that rustic appeal.

5. Mixed Material Gate

Many of the above gates are mixed material. However, as noted, you can have your contractors custom design a gate for you, and the two materials they usually choose are wood and metal.

One popular style features wooden privacy fencing at the bottom and open panels at the top. The contractors add metal net fencing or pickets to create a lattice effect in that open panel. They might even add metal studs.

Another option is a modern update on the metal-and-wood privacy gate. Instead of choosing ornate metal, you could opt for a solid metal framework, which will add the geometric shaping popular in modern design.
